ket, and slack back the small set-screw in the pivotsocket. The pivot pin, bracket, and all gear except thebed-plate can be removed along with the gun. Our sketchesare to scale. For smaller guns a proportionate reductionof material should be made. To mount this gear in the bow of a sailing-boat, a suitablesupport must be fixed, and the bed-plate of the gear bolted tosame. Cross beams of oak, tied with an extra gunwale stripforward, is best. If mounted in a punt, a chock of ascertainedheight is needed to bring the gun to bear its correct distanceabove water. Unless the punt is a very strong and heavy one,the gun-mounting chock should be stayed with a ;- in. iron rodfastened from the stem chock. This gear, like all other springs, should be kept wellgreased when in use, and before placing it away for anylength of time. It should be needless to add that all the work in thisapparatus should be of the best. Every part should be agood fit, yet perfectly free and smooth in its working. Unless

o bo CSJ CQ 194 THE COMPLETE WILDFOWLER this is so, and the best of material used in its construction, there is danger of a breakage occurring with the gear, whichis a matter almost too awful to think of in the case of a verylarge weapon fully loaded. A word should be added on the subject of the boot-jackrecoil. The arrangement may be easily enough understood byreference to our sketch. The recoil board (elm) may bevaried in length according to the depth of the punt in whichthis gear is to be employed, and the bend of the gun-stock.The longer the board is, the less recoil will be felt. Thislength, however, must be determined according to the depthof punt, etc. About seventeen inches is the average height. Thepadding of the cushion is best of horsehair, covered withleather. Wool loses its elasticity to an appreciable extentwhen wet, and canvas is not so lasting as waterproof leather. Thus it is inadvisable to use either of these materials inmaking the cushion. The board is slightly hollow
