Tail-coverts purewhite. Length 27 in.; wing 16 in. RED-BREASTED GOOSE Bernicla ruflcollis (Pallas) Only one or two examples of this exceedingly rare autumnand winter migrant have been obtained in this country. Itinhabits Northern Siberia, and during migration is met within the extreme east of Europe. The general colour above is black ; the ear patches, throat,and breast chestnut; lores and belly white ; chin black.Length from 20 to 22 in. ; wing 14*5 in. COMMON SHELD-DUCK Tado7na cornuta (Gmelin) This species is with us throughout the year. It breeds inburrows on sand dunes near our large rivers and the sea. BRENT GOOSE BIRDS MET WITH BY THE WILDFOWLER 305 RUDDY SHELDRAKE Tadorna casarca (LinncEus) This bird is a rare irregular autumn and winter migrant to the British Isles. In summer it inhabits the southern Palse-arctic region. Many of the examples of this species shotwith us have been proved to be birds escaped from captivity. The adult male has the upper back, mantle, scapulars, andthe whole of the under parts, yellowish chestnut; ring roundlower neck, quills, upper tail-coverts, and tail, black, with agreenish gloss. The adult female is similar to the male, butthe neck ring is absent. The young in first plumage are some-what similar to the adult females, but are lighter in colour,and the wing-coverts, scapulars, and innermost secondariesare tinged with brown. Length about 25 in.
