Description
English: An area of land in Gümüşsuyu, comprising part of Ayaspaşa Cemetery in Taksim, was bought from the Turkish government by the German Empire in order to position a mission building in İstanbul. The construction of the Embassy Palace, in Neo-Renaissance style, was begun by the architect-engineer Herbert Göbbels in 1874, but was finished by Albert Kortüm after Göbbels passed away. The embassy was opened in 1877 by Ambassador Prince Heinrich VII. Once Turkey was declared a Republic, all embassies were moved to Ankara and the building became the Consulate General of Germany. Today the building serves as the consulate, visa office and the German Archeological Institution.

1871’de kurulan Alman İmparatorluğu’nun İstanbul’da bir misyon merkezi açmak istemesi üzerine, dönemin Türk hükümetinin önerisi doğrultusunda Gümüşsuyu’nda bir arazi satın alındı. Bu arazi, Taksim’deki Ayaspaşa Mezarlığı’nın bir kısmını da içeriyordu. Mimar-mühendis Herbert Göbbels’in 1874’te tasarladığı büyükelçilik sarayının Göbbels’in vefatı nedeniyle yarım kalan yapımı Albert Kortüm tarafından tamamlandı. Bina 1877’de Büyükelçi Prens VII. Heinrich tarafından hizmete açıldı. Cumhuriyetin ilanından sonra tüm büyükelçiliklerin Ankara’ya taşınması sonucu 1931’de Alman Başkonsolosluğu olarak kullanılmaya başlandı. Hem iç dekorasyonu hem de cephe özellikleri neo-Rönesans üslubunda olan binanın karakteristikleri günümüze dek korunmuştur. Vize bölümü ve Alman Arkeoloji Enstitüsü de burada hizmet vermektedir.
