Edgar T, Wherry Orchis rofundifolla Northern Vermont, June, 1924. S';>1iaj^ninn moss, wliich is likely to be free from parasitic ore worth while. Soil temperature is not an im- portant factor in the case of this species, for I have seen it both in Georgia and in Arkansas, where even in the woods the soils heat up considerably in midsummer. After the retreat of the last ice sheet it was able to migrate into the glaci- ated territory as far as Minnesota. Ontario, and southern Quebec, so it is evidently also resistant to win- ter's cold. It always grows where there is shade, a moderate though not excessive supply of moisture, and a chance for air to circulate around its roots. The lanting. thev are likely to be classed as dead, and other things to be planted in the same spot, ^^ore often, however, the moving of the roots from one place to another simply residts in furnishing a new item of food for rodents, beetles, slugs, or other or- ganisms which chance to be more abundant in the garden than in the orchid's native haunts, and failure to reapix'ar due to annihilation. MArvK-spoTTKi) Orch id. Orchis rotundifolia Banks. In contrast to the preceding spe- cies, this is a decidedly northern plant. Where it managed to sur- vive giaciation is indeed somewhat of a mystery, for it now grows apparently only in territory from wdiich all vegetation was wiped out by the last ice sheet. Presumably somewhere within its vast range from IMontana to eastern Quebec and north to Yukon province a col- ony was spared, and furnished the stock to reoccupy the area after the ice melted away. The fact that it has been unable to spread south further than Herkimer and Lewis counties, in north-central New York, shows its requirement for cool summer conditions, and the suggestions previously made as to cultivating the Rams-head Orchid apply equally well to it. In addi- tion, it demands a continuous sup- ply of water containing lime.
