Title
Copper-alloy Gilt Buckle Plate
Description
English: An incomplete rectangular gilt copper-alloy buckle-plate of Medieval date. Dimensions: weight 3.95g, length 28.12mm, length of plate 24.98mm, width 14.30mm, total thickness 3.79mm of doubled over plate. The plate sheet is 0.86mm thick, thickness including rivets 6.54mm. Back plate is only 10.77mm wide and survives to a length of 17.90mm. The bifid recesses are 3.24mm wide and set 2.47mm apart. Four of the five rivets survive. The largest, at the centre of the plate has a diameter of 3.32mm. There seems to have been a small incised line around the upper surface of the frame 0.69mm from the edge. The gilt only survives on the upper surface of the plate and it an incomplete state. The plate on the reverse has an irregular (trefid shaped - see spoon typologies) break across the two rivet holes on the outer edge of the plate.
