Title |
Copper Alloy Roman Zoomorphic Brooch |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy cast brooch in the form of an animal - probably a deer or stag. Based on style and form, it is likely that this item is of Roman date, probably 1st - 2nd century AD. Only three of the limbs of the animal remain, with the lower portions of each missing. The head is also missing, though it would have been curved backwards, towards the animal's back, as can be seen by the neck positioning. The tail is still present, and helps somewhat in identifying the type of animal it may be.
There is moulded relief work on the upper surface of the brooch, with indents and incisions marking musculature features of the animal. The back of the brooch is slightly concave, and there are two small moulded rectangular plates at either end (at the chest and tail respectively) rising perpendicular to the back surface of the brooch. Both plates have small circular holes in the centre, which would have held the brooch pin.
