Title
Copper alloy Thimble
Description
English: A copper alloy thimble, probably of Medieval - Post Medieval date. The thimble has angled sides and domed top with small circular indentations arranged in a spiral around the top and continuing down the sides to the base. An incised line runs around the outer side below the indentations just above the rim. The base has been squashed in which has led to some damage to the rim. It is now 24.5mm long by 16.3mm wide; it is 20.4mm in height, the sides are 1.2 mm thick and it weighs 7.70 g.

Holmes (1987:1, fig 2a) suggests thimbles of this type are heavy duty thimble dating to c.AD 1400-1550. Egan (2005:131-2) publishes a similar example, no.627 without the line at the base, from a context dated to c. AD 1530-1550.
