Title |
Copper alloy medieval ring type thimble |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy ring type thimble. The thimble is formed from a ring of metal with both ends open, which tapers towards the top end. There is an incised line running around the edge of both ends of the thimble, between which are the hand punched holes. The holes are large and punched in very uneven vertical lines around the thimble and appear quite haphazard. The original surface of the thimble survives with a dark green patina, though some of the dots appear with a light brown patina. The thimble is 14.4mm long, 16.8mm in diameter at the base, 13.94mm in diameter at the top and weighs 5.27g. Ring type thimbles were, in general, used for heavier type work rather than fine sewing (though they were preferred by tailors)See the Finds Research Group Data sheet 9. This thimble probably dates from the 15th or 16th century. |
