hileHarriet Tubman died but yesterday, havinglived a century. Both these sincere souls gave their livesfor black men. One explored Africa, butdid not stop with lake and mountain, butsaw and knew the human hearts that beatin those dark bodies and tried to make adeaf world realize that they were fellow men. The other, Harriet Tubman, foughtAmerican slavery single handed and was apioneer in that organized effort known as theUndergTound Railroad. She was born aslave, nearly beaten to death by her masterand ran away. Then she returned andhelped others to escape. Rewards amount-ing to $40,000 were offered for her deador alive, but she flitted like a shadow southand north and north and south, until shehad led thousands into freedom and wasknown all over the nation as Moses.Wendell Phillips and other noted aboli-tionists knew her.
