idential campaign of 1840, weremade in such large numbers from about 1845 to 1870that they are still so plentiful that it would not paythe counterfeiters to reproduce them. Consequentlythe collector of these American bottles may pursuehis hobby in reasonable safety. At Venice or Murano the different varieties ofglass made by the ancient Romans and Greeks havebeen reproduced. Among these reproductions areexamples of early Christian glass with inlaid goldmedallions from the catacombs of Rome of the fourthand fifth centuries. This gilt glass, however, wasforged more or less cleverly in the seventeenth andeighteenth centuries. The design is in gold leaf, thelines of the features and draperies being outlined byscratching through the metal with a sharp point.The design was then covered with another sheet ofglass.
