Title |
Cruciform Brooch |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper alloy early Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch in excellent condition. The head consists of a central panel (measuring 10.3mm in height and 12.5mm in width) with no side wings and a top knob. The top knob is circular in section and measures 8.3 in diameter.
The narrow high arched bow has a length of 28.3mm and a width of 10.1mm. It is plain except for transverse grooves at each terminal end. Below the bow is a slightly semi-circular panel with a flat ridge in the centre. It has two transverse grooves above and below it. The tapering foot then terminates into an animal-head terminal in the form of a bird. The head has two incised oval eyes and a rounded beak. On the back of the head, behind the head plate are the remains of a pin mechanism, which is heavily encrusted in iron corrosion. This would suggest that the pin was iron. Behind the foot panel is a short catchplate (measuring 13.3mm in length) which has a semi-circular perforation on the top edge.The overall length of the brooch is 77.6mm and the width is 12.5mm. |
