In Tuesday, May 23. this picturesque andsheltered retreat the world-weary Diocletianbuilt his huge fortress-like palace, whose vastextent, enclosing temples, halls, living rooms,baths, barracks, offices, etc., as a ruin nowshelters houses and dwellers of humbler mold.Spalato has its cathedral, too, a quaint circularone, and a museum with no mean collection ofthe antiquities of this famous locality. From Spalato we drive to Salona, a few milesdistant, an ancient Roman war harbor and arse-nal most beautifully situated. The voyage is continued as far as possible byday on account of the beauty of the mountain-ous archipelago, which increases in grandeur aswe proceed. Wednesday, May 24. Abbazia. This Aus-trian Newport with its fine grounds and beautifulwalks deserves a brief visit. The few hours de-voted to it will not delay our journey.
