Guys are also necessary ;it points where poles arc set inother than a vertical position. Where the soil is not linn or solid, or where poles are subject tounusual stress, h is sometimes necessary to obtain additional stiffnessby what is known as crib-bracing, as may he seen from Fig. 68. Thisconsists of placing two short logs at the butt of the pole. Theselogs need not be more than 1 to 5 feel long, or more than 8 to 9 inches

This crib-bracing is sometimes also necessary to gi^egreater stability to stubs or short poles to which guys are fastened. While, as a rule, it is not advisable to use trees for guy supports,it is sometimes necessary to do this, but the trees should be sound andshould be protected in a proper manner from injury. On privateproperty, permission should first be obtained from the owner to usethe tree for such purpose. The guy itself should be of standard cable, consisting of 7 strandsof No. 12 B. & S. Gauge iron or steel wTire. This is the standardguy cable, and should be used in all cases, except for very light polesand light linework, where a smaller cable having a minimum diameterof \ inch may be used. The guy wires should be fastened at the endsby means of suitable clamps. All guy cables and clamps should beheavily galvanized, to prevent rust
