his amount duringa full service application. The amount of pressure resulting in the applicationchamber for a certain brake-pipe reduction, depends onthe comparative volumes of the application and pressurechambers. These volumes are such that with 70 poundsin the pressure chamber and nothing in the applicationchamber, if they are allowed to remain connected by theports in the slide valve, they will equalize at about 50pounds. Service Lap. The conditions just described continueuntil the pressure in the pressure chamber is reducedenough below that in the brake pipe to cause the dif-ference in pressure on the two sides of piston 26 tcforce it and graduating valve 28 to the left until theshoulder on the piston stem strikes the right-hand end ofslide valve 31, the position indicated in Fig. 303, andknown as Service Lap. In this position, graduatingvalve 28 has closed port z so that no more air can flowfrom the pressure chamber to the application chamber; ET BRAKE EQUIPMENT 685 ^£^5^pggg;3

The flow of air past applicationvalve 5 to the brake cylinders continues until their pres-sure equals that in the application chamber when thegraduating spring forces piston 10 to the position shownin Fig. 303, closing port b. The brake-cylinder pressureis then practically the same as that in the applicationchamber. It will be seen that whatever pressure exists in theapplication chamber will be maintained in the brake cyl-inder by the pressure maintaining feature already de-scribed. When the automatic brake valve is placed in releaseposition, and the brake-pipe pressure in chamber p isincreased above that in the pressure chamber, equalizingpiston 26 moves to the left, carrying with it equalizingslide valve 31 and graduating valve 28 to the releaseposition as shown in Fig. 299.
