Title |
DUR-B44368: Roman Dragonesque Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy dragonesque brooch dating to the period AD 50 to 175.
Only a fragment of the brooch is present and it is the head section with a pointed nose which widens to allow space for an eye. The eye consists of two concentric circles, both of which contain traces of enamel. The inner circle contains green enamel while the outer circle contains red enamel. Curving straight out and down away from the head is a possible ear. There is a circular cell at the end of this with traces of red enamel still present. Below the head of the brooch is an oval shape with a groove through the centre which is reminiscent of the stylised ear on other brooches. There are many dragoneque brooches recorded on the PAS database including DUR-F7E453 and SWYOR-638528 which have a similar nose shape although the ear is different. DUR-7C7147 displays the oval shape with a groove through the centre being used as an ear. Dragonesque brooches are typically through to be Romano-British as they show continuity from the indigenous styles althought the Roman influence is quite clear. |
