Fig. 76. More striking than the church itself in the in-terior view is the magnificent ciborio or baldacchinoover the high altar and the gleaming pala of silvergilt that forms the back of it. Four slender octa-gonal columns of red marble from Lustiza^ in theterritory of Cattaro support a canopy like thoseof Trail or Curzola, formed by a series of three re-ceding octagonal stages, with little columns carryingtrefoiled arches, and each w4th a sloping roof Agilt angel surmounts the whole. Trifone,the fourth side bearing only a Byzantinesque scroll.The figures are long, attenuated, and rude, b\itspirited. The Byzantine acanthus occurs in thefour main capitals and on the back frieze, and alsoin the smaller cornices of the octagonal stages, butthis, in Dalmatia, is no evidence of extreme anti-quity, and it is combined with other details ob-viously not older than the fourteenth century. Thesilver gilt pala is evidently not in its original state :it no longer fills up the width between its cabledmargins, and the central cusps are imperfect.
