MARIA • With these dated mosaics before him for com-parison, it is difficult to understand how ProfessorEitelberger could have arrived at the conclusionthat the apse mosaics were made in the thirteenthcentury. The mosaics of the baldacchino differ totallyboth in design and execution from those of the af)se,and are obviously divided from them in date bymany centuries. More expression and action isattempted, and the drawing of the figures is moreambitious both as regards attitude and di-apery, butthey are far inferior in efiect to the older mosaics,and the effort after greater naturalism has re-sulted in a giotesqueness that suffers by con-trast with the severe conventionalism of the olderschool. The altar frontal is of silver gilt, and datesapparently from the sixteenth century. It consistsof a series of niches of classical architecture with afigure in each, the sides of the niches being made 326 Parenzo: tJie Diiomo. (Ch. xxxi. to vanish in perspective to the middle of the frontal.
