ng skillful can plan and carry out many fanciful andintricate evolutions, but as a rule it is safer to limitones self to the simpler movements which can bereadily understood and followed by those less ex-perienced. The following are some of the mostpopular figures employed. The accompanying di-agram may assist in rendering the explanationsclear. X represents the centre of the room; A, B, C, and D, the four corners. 1indicates the head of theroom, and 2 the oppositeend. In the plain marchthe line is supposed tomarch from A to B to Cto D to A, etc., thoughthe direction may be re-versed at the option ofthe leader. After march-ing around the roomtwo or three times the leading couple, followedby the others, turn at 1 and march down thecentre. At 2 they separate, the ladies passing to theright and the gentlemen to the left. At 1 the twolines pass each other, the gentlemen marching nextto the wall. At 2 they again pass. At 1 the leaderand his partner join hands and march down the A 1 B D z C

At 2 theleading couple turns to the right, the next couple tothe left, followed alternately by the other couples.The two columns meeting at 1, march down thecentre in fours. At 2 the first four turns to the rightand the next four to the left. Meeting at 1, marchdown the centre eight abreast. At 2, four turn toright and four to left. At 1, the first four marchdown the centre followed by the next four, and theother fours fall in line alternately. At 2, one coupleturns to the right and the other to the left. Meetingat 1, fall in by twos. The line has now regained itsoriginal form, and the plain march is resumed. When numbers permit, the Hour-Glass Figure ispretty and effective. March from B to X to C to Dto X to A to B. The lines must be perfectly straight,and the angles true and sharp. If there be not alarge enough number to outline the figure whenmarching two abreast, it may be executed in singlefile, each gentleman
