CHAPTER XXX TO THE RESCUE—CONCLUSION It was a time for quick action and nobodyrealized this more than did Dave, as he saw theshaggy brute close in on the towboy. One squeezeof those powerful forepaws and Hank Snoggersribs would be crushed in and he would bekilled. With hardly a second thought concerning whathe was doing, Dave raised his rifle, took quickaim and fired at the bear. Then he fired a secondshot, and followed this up with a third. At the first shot the bear dropped his hold andswung around, uttering a loud snort of pain ashe did so. He had been struck in the back, forthe youth had not dared to aim too close to Snogger.Then, thinking that he had been hurt by the manbefore him, the animal made a leap and sent thecowboy sprawling. As he stood over his victimthe second shot hit him in the hind quarters, causinghim to whirl around. Then the third shot landedin his side, and made him double up like a ball androll over and over. 292

Dont let him git at me agin I Dave tried to fire another shot, but for somereason then unknown the rifle refused to work.The bear was rolling over and over and threatenedeach instant to roll on the cowboy and crush him.Snogger was so weak he was unable to save himselfor do anything in his own defense. Dave glanced around and his eye fell on theloose stones, some of which had caused him a fall.He dropped his rifle, seized a fair-sized stone andhurled it at the bear. The youths aim was good,and the missile landed on bruins head, all but stun-ning him. Thats it! Gi—give him ano—another!gasped Hank Snogger. He had raised himselfup on one elbow and was looking at Dave plead-ingly. He was too weak to get to his feet, forhis fight with the bear had lasted for some timebefore Dave had put in an appearance.
