As soon as possible they hurried on in thehope of finding him, but found themselves cut off by acolumn of Turkish infantry, which lay stretched across theroad. There was some sharp fighting with the infantryand artillery of the command, and when night came onneither party had any decided advantage. On the morn-ing of the 20th the Turks began the fighting at Bukova,just north of Plevna, where they engaged the Russianright. The Russian centre attacked the heights of Griv-itza, to the east of Plevna, and after a hard struggle droveout the Turks from some of their positions, and forcedthem fairly into Plevna. On the Russian left the Turkswere driven back, but not without heavy losses by theRussians, and some of the regiments suffered so severelythat they were put in retreat. While the Russians were considering the fight nearlyover, and thinking that another attack would put them inpossession of Plevna, the streets of that town seemed tovomit forth Turkish troops by the thousand. Ten, twenty, yes, forty thousand Turks werethere to confront the Russian column, less than tenthousand strong, and having the advantage of position onthe hills above the Russians. The latter made a heroicdefence, but it was of no use. Nearly 3,000 men and 74officers were killed or wounded, and so many artilleryhorses were killed that the Russians abandoned seventeencaissons and several guns. The Russians retired toNicopolis, and the Turks set to work to strengthen Plevna,as they realized that the Russians would speedily attemptits capture.
