TheSikhs met the columns of the advancing British front tofront, and inch by inch the British infantry made goodits ground, until the first line gave way to fall back onthe second. The British lost three hundred men incarrying the town of Barra Kalra ; and in the stormingof Chota Kalra, one half of the first brigade was killed ordisabled, without counting the great loss of the horseartillery in aiding the assault. One troop was nearlyannihilated. Meanwhile* Colonels Campbell and Douglas, command-ing the left wing, kept carefully in line with the advancemovement of the right, but in a manner much morecautious. They ordered their men to lie upon the groundwhen halted, and advancing by slow degrees they reacheda point from which they could command the head of theDwarah creek.
