The one that is illustrated on Plate VIII has a fieldextraordinarily rich with animal and floral forms, and a horder oflarn-e flowers and beautiful birds artfully combined into running dec-oration. The outer band of the border is made up of Howers com-bined with the Chinese cloud band. On Plate IX is illustrated the texture of a sixteenth centuryPersian rug. that although still in com))aratively good condition, hasbeen worn down, until the weft shines in l)right cross lines through thefigures of the Shah Abbas and other florals, and of the birds andanimals. CHISELLED EFFECTS At this point it is interesting to note that different dyes are aptto affect the wool differently, and that the wool dyed in some colourswears down faster than wool dyed in other colours.
