m the Halles across to the left bank of the Seine, and out the longAvenue des Gobelins. The entrance to the courtyard, Avith LesGobelins on the gate beneath RF, is simple but impressive. Oddly enough the family of Gobelins, whose name has becomeinextricably associated with ta))estries, were not tapestry weavers andnever had anything to do with tapestry weaving. As is shown by theinscription at the left of the entrance gate: .lean and PhilibertGobelin, merchant dyers of scarlet, who have left their name to thisquarter of Paris and to the tapestry factory, had their works here atthe end of the fifteenth centiu-y. The Gobelin family 2^iosi)ered. and from dyers finally becamefinanciers. By the beginning of the seventeenth century dyeing wasbeneath their dignity and they were glad to dispose of the propertythat had made them rich, and was to make them famous.
