Later it became the Christian cross.Hieroglyphs, the oldest of alphabets, were in theiressentials magic symbols, but became later themost essential elements in the succeeding folk arts.Chanler believes firmly if a decoration is deprivedof symbolic meaning it automatically loses itsintrinsic aesthetic quality. For this reason—asit is interpreted by him—the ultimate aim ofdecorative art is the appropriate symbol, whichlends to it a lasting value and lifts it above theordinary work of a craftsman. Chanlers metallicunderlays, overlays and reliefs in gold, silver oraluminum are executed with the idea of achievinga greater symbolic quality. Chanlers symbolic design has to suggest someway or other the sensuous side of Natures soul,and the sensuous force of his own emotions. Thebest illustrations in this respect are his Flameand Deep Sea Fantasy, the former an elaboratedecorative panel in Mrs. Gertrude Vanderbilt Jour sevenfj SEPTEMBER 9 2 2
