ct that the x-rays pass out in everydirection from the face of the anode or target,(see Fig. 31-A) which is situated in the center ofthe tube, it is necessary, if the clearest possibleshadows are to be produced, to use only thoserays which have the same general direction andwhich have an equal amount of penetration. Nowit is known that the most rapid and effective raysare those which pass out at right angles from thecathode stream designated by PR. Inasmuch aswe desire to use these rays, and these rays only,in casting our shadows, we must establish somemeans of preventing the other rays (S,S,S,S)from escaping from the immediate area surround-ing the tube, and this is accomplished by meansof the tube shield, compression diaphragm andcompression cylinder. The tube shield (Fig. 32) a sectional diagramof which is shown in Fig. 31-B by T. S. is madeof leaded glass, there being a sufficient amount oflead in the glass to prevent ordinary rays frompassing through it. The compression diaphragm
