The other wave, or that created by the make,is current in the wrong direction, and is calledinverse current. In some induction coils thisinverse current is the source of much trouble andwhere it is present to any appreciable extent, willresult in blurred radiographs. It can be con-trolled, however, by the use of valve tubes, ora spark gap, arranged in series with the x-ray tube, the valve tube or spark gap serving thefunction of cutting out the weaker or inverse cur-rent, without interfering to any appreciable ex-tent with the stronger current which is deliveredto the terminals of the x-ray tube. The induction coil is used on the direct currentof 110 or 220 volts. Where only the alternatingcurrent is available, some means must be usedto change the current from alternating to directbefore it enters the primary circuit of the coil. X-RAY MACHINES 51
