ORFF OR INDUCTION COIL—TES- LA OR HIGH FREQUENCY COIL—IN- TERRUPTERLESS TRANSFORMER. The Rhumkorff or Induction Coil The Rhumkorff or induction coil which isthe most common type of x-ray machine in usetoday, consists of two principal parts, each ofwhich is a coil of wire, one being contained with-in the other, although they have no electrical con-nection (see Fig. 11). The inner coil or primary as it is called,consists of a few turns of very coarse insulatedwire wrapped about a bundle of soft iron whichis known as the magnetic core. The outer coil or secondary is made up of agreat many turns of fine insulated wire. It hasbeen estimated that in a 12-inch induction coilthe secondary coil is wound with between twentyand thirty miles of wire. This, of course, makespossible an enormous number of turns of wireso that when we consider that each turn of thesecondary induces a current in the turn directlyadjacent to it, which must be added to the current 43 44 l;vi Al.
