Both thefe roots were planted in the open ground, in theBotanic Garden at Edinburgh; one died ; the other after fometime did well, andlaft fummer flowered and produced feed. Ihad an accurate drawing of the plant made by Mr. Fife, whichI now have the pleafure of laying before the Society. It ex-preffes very well the general habit of the plant, which was ofa pale fea-green colour, and grew to the height of threefeet. The ftem is deciduous, but the root is perennial.Every part of the plant, when wounded, poured out a richmilky juice, refembiing in fmell and tafte-Afa foetida ; and attimes a fmell refembiing garlick, fuch as a faint impregnationof Afa foetida yields, was perceivable at the difta
