The President was deeply distressed.Sefior Limantour had rendered supremely great servicesto his country, and it was a public calamity that heshould be discredited in the eyes of the ignorant masses.Efforts were made to discover the source of these attacks,but in vain. Diaz at once sent for the conspirator, and con-fronted him with the evidence of his perfidy. GeneralReyes promptly resigned his office. Instead of drivingReyes into private life, the President, in considerationof his former record as a soldier, used his influence tomake him governor of the state of Nuevo Leon. In 1908 President Diaz stirred the republic fromfrontier to frontier by publicly declaring that he wouldrefuse another term of office.
