, Franz Xaver, painter andlithographer, was born at Menzenschwand, nearSt. Blasien, in the Black Forest, April 20, 1806.After studying engraving for a time at Freiburg,he went in 1823 to Munich, where he received someinstruction from Stieler in portrait painting, work-ing meantime in Pilotys lithographic institute tosupport himself during his novitiate. In 1828 hemoved to Carlsruhe, and a successful portrait ofthe Grand Duke Leopold put him on the road tofortune. He was appointed painter to the court,and was now enabled to make journeys to Franceand Italy for his further improvement. In 1834he settled in Paris, making, however, constantjourneys to foreign capitals as his position as afashionable portrait painter became assured. Hepainted many European royalties and distinguishedpersons, and his meretricious and mediocre artsoon achieved a vogue greatly above his merits.He has been compared with Lawrence, to whom,both in career and ceuvre, he affords a parallel FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER

Winterhalters merits are tobe looked for in his composition and organization,and in his power to suggest the superficialelegance of an aristocratic sitter. Among hisnumerous portraits the most famous were thoseof Louis Philippe, Queen Amdlie, and all themembers of the Orleans family ; Napoleon III.,the Empress Eugenie, and the Prince Imperial(exhibited at the Salon of 1864); the EmpressEugenie and her Court, the Grand Duchess Helenof Russia, King Leopold, Queen Victoria and herfamily, Prince Metternich, the Emperor FrancisJoseph, etc. He also painted a few genre picturesand landscapes, chiefly Italian, and executed someengravings and lithographs. A few days beforehis death he made a will, in which he directed thattwelve pictures he had never shown should remainin a box in which he had secured them until fiftyyears after his death, when they were to be sub-mitted to the verdict of a genera
