896. WOLF VOET, Victor, (who has been confoundedby some writers with the pupil of Rembrandt, JanVictoors, or Fictoors,) was the son of a painter ofthe same name. He was born at Antwerp in 1612.He was the scholar first of his father, and after-wards of Rubens, whose style he studied with muchsuccess. In 1644 he entered the Artists Guild. A Visitation by him, in the church of St. Jacquesat Antwerp, is in imitation of the same subject onthe wing of Rubenss Descent from the Cross inthe Cathedral of Antwerp. In the Dresden Gallerythere is a Head of Medusa, signed Victor Wolf-woet. He died in his native city in 1652. WOLGEMUT, Michael, of Nuremberg, the sonof a painter named Valentin ; born at Nurembergin 1434, died there in 1519. He was, accordingto Dr. Henry Thode (one of the greatest livingauthorities on the School of Nuremberg), a pupiland assistant of Hans Pleydenwurff, whose widowhe married in 1473, and in whose house he estab-lished his own workshop. His name appears MICHAEL WOLGEMUT

Hanfstangl photo (Munich Cillery THE CRUCIFIXION PAINTERS AND ENGRAVERS. among the citizens of Nuremberg between theyears 1473 and 1495, and by 1479 lie must havebeen regarded as the most prominent artist of thecity, as in that year he was selected to executethe altar-piece for the church at Zwickau. Fromthat time up to 1508, the date of the last work ofwhich we have documentary proof, he undertooka great number of important commissions, thoughthe execution of the work was often entrusted topupils and assistants. The merits of Wolgemutas an independent artist have indeed been greatlyoverrated, and he cannot be placed in the samecategory with the three great masters of thisSchool in the fifteenth century—Meister Berthold(who is now known to have belonged to the Lan-dauer family), Pfenning, and Hans Pleydenwurff.As a follower of his master, and at times of Schuleinof Ulm, of Schongauer, and others, his works oftenhave a superficial attractiveness of compositionand grouping enhanced by
