ng the art of drawing. After quit-ting the engravers desk ho went, in 1624, into theworkshop of Pieter Kouwenhoven, a painter onglass, and in 1628 he entered the studio of thegreat Rembrandt van Ryn, but he borrowed littleof his masters stylo and manner. Dons talentwas all his own ; his pictures, though small, aresuperb specimens of the art, finished with care, andtrue to nature. After setting up for himself, Dou is reported tohave worked at portrait painting ; but his mannerwas too slow and laboured to please his sitters, andhe then took as subjects for his paintings thescenes of humble industry that the neighbouringmarket-place afiordedj and interiors graced bybuxom maids. No details have been handed down to us of Donslife. It was probably passed !)a))pily and tpjietlyat his work.
