ust have paintedthe Madonna and Child with Angels in thesacristy of the Church of the Redentore at Venice—one of the loveliest of all his creations—remark-able alike for its deeply devotional feeling, itssimplicity of conception, and its bright colour andcareful technical execution. Although still tradi-tionally attributed to Giovanni Bellini, it showsno further signs of that masters influences thando Alvises other paintings. This picture is almosta replica of the Madonna of 1489, in the Galleryat Vienna. A later, and unfortunately but little-known work by Alvise, is the beautiful singlefigure of Sta. Giustina de Borromei, in thecollection of Sig. Bagati-Valsecchi at Milan—oneof the most exquisite creations of later VenetianQuattrocento art. A careful study of Alvises works, and moreespecially of certain of the highly-individualizedheads to be found in his various altar-pieces—not to mention the existence of at least onesigned portrait (once in the Bonomi-Cereda LUIGI VIVARINI
