ork of the artists own hand, and was to be madea3 beautiful as the art of the painter could makeit. The altar-piece was to be completed in fouryears. It was not, however, until 1444 that theartist received the final payment for it. The exactform of the ancona cannot at present be determined.It was removed from its place above the highaltar of S. Francesco in the year 1752, but untilthe year 1810 it remained in the choir of the Con-vent church. It was then sold to the Cav. Sergiu-liani di Arezzo. In the year 1823 several portionsof the altar-piece, including a large panel repre-senting St. Francis in Glory, and a Madonna andChild with Angels, were in the possession of thePriore Antonio Angelucci at Montecontieri, nearAsciano. The Madonna and Child is missing,but eleven fragments of the ancona have beenidentified. The largest panel, the St. Francisin Glory, is in the possession of Mr. Berenson.Six smaller panels, representing scenes from the AMBROGIO STEFANO DA FOSSANO CALLED BORGOGNONE
