later years he became impoverished,and retired to Bungay, where he died in 1716. DIXON, John, an engraver in mezzotint, was bornat Dublin about 1740, and dh-d in London in 1780.He studied under West in his native city, and be-came in 1766 a member of the Incorporated Societyof Artists. There are several fine portraits engravedby him after Sir Joshua Reynolds and other masters. DIXON, Natiianiki,. Nothing whatever isknown as to this artist, although ho has beencalled by some writers the brother of John Dixon.No one can identify the works of John Dixon,unless they are those signed with a D only, whichare usually attributed to Nathaniel Dixon ; butminiatures signed N. D. are frequently to bofound, and two contempomry letters in the Wel-beck Collection mention casually Nathaniel Dixonthe limner. Several of his portraits, one verylarge in size, are at Montagu House ; there arealso some at Ham, and a few very imjiortant onesin the Madresfield Collection, whAst one beauty ia NATHANIKl. DIXON
