he was instructed.His pictures bear date from 1640 to 1669, and repre-sent fruit, flowers, vases and ornaments of gold andsilver, musical instruments, and similar objects ofstill-life. He was a perfect master of chiaroscuro.He particularly excelled in imitating the transparentclearness of glass and crjstal, which he was fondof introducing into his pictures. His paintingswere so superior to those of every artist that hadpreceded liirn, in similar subjects, that they wereanxiously sought after by the most distinguishedpersons of his time, and were purchased at largeprices. They are still helil in high estimation.Being obliged to leave Utrecht during the troubleswhich took place in Holland in 1671, he tookrefuge at Antwerp, where ho died in 1G74.
