painted by JanWijck. He painted several views in Scotland,etched a plate called The Siege, and also madedesigns for a book on hunting and hawking. Hedied at Mortlake in 1702. WIJCK, Thomas, (Wyck, or Van Wyck,) wasborn at Beverwyck about 1616. He was a pupilof his father, and improved himself by a resi-dence in Italy, particularly in the environs ofNaples, where he executed many sketches which hesubsequently worked up into drawings of coastviews. He excelled in painting shipping and sea-ports, with small figures, very frequently oddcharacters, such as quacks, alchemists, and misers,in a style resembling that of Peter van Laar. Healso painted fairs, public markets, and the interiorsof chemists laboratories. In 1660 he was appointedDean of the Guild at Haarlem. He came to Eng-land about the time of the Restoration, and wasmuch employed. He painted a View of London be-fore the fire, and another of the north bank of theThames, from Southwark, exhibiting the mansions ANTOINE JOSEPH WIERTZ

He died at Haarlem in August1677. We have twenty-one scarce etchings byThomas Wijck of landscapes and figures ; thebest known of them is The Open Coffer. WIJCKERSLOOT, John van, a Dutch painterof the 17th century, supposed, from the extremerarity of his works, to have painted as an amateur.He may be identical with one Johannes Wijcker-sloot, a clergyman at Weesep, near Dordrecht, in1651. His few known cabinet pictures are care-fully executed in the manner of Teniers. In 1658he was one of the officers of the College of Paintersat Utrecht, and Dean in 1670. The Berlin
