omano.A Pieta ; after Michelangelo. SCULPTORE, Diana, (Ghisi ?) was born atMantua about 1535, and is believed to have been adaughter of Gio. Bat. Sculptore. The dates onher sixty plates range from 1581 to 1588. About1579 she married the architect and sculptor, Fran-cesco Ricciarelli, of Volterra, after which she occa-sionally added his name to hers in her signatures. In a few instances she signed her work with thesingle word Diana, sometimes with a monogramcomposed of a D. with an S. inside it, followed withthe word incidebat or Mantuana. She engravedafter Raphael, Zuccari, Paris Nogari, and especiallyGiulio Romano. Her best plates are : The Martyrdom of St. Catherine. The Feast of Psyche ; after Giulio Romano. The Woman taken in Adultery ; after the same. The Birth of John the Baptist; after the same. The Birth of Apollo and Diana ; after the same. The Corpse of Patroclus carried off the Field ; after the same.Christs charge to Peter ; after Raphael. LAZARO BASTIANUS CALLED SEBASTIANI

(Collection of Father OConnor, KeighleyMADONNA AND CHILD PAINTERS AND ENGRAVERS. SCULPTORE, Giovanni Battista, (Ghisi?)called Mantovano and Bertano, was born atMantua in 1503. He was architect, painter, andengraver, and a disciple of Giulio Romano andMarc Antonio. After the death of the former hebecame architect-in-chief to the Duke of Mantua. He is said to have designed altar-pieces for Man-tuan churches, which were actually painted byBrusasorci, Guisoni, and Ippolito Costa. He en-graved about twenty plates, the dates on whichrange from 1536 to 1540. In technique they are dry, deficient in half-tones, but good in drawing. Heused to be considered the head of the Ghisi family, but later researches have gone far to prove that hisname was really Sculptore, Scultore, or De Scul-tori, and that the word Sculptor, which occasion-ally follows his usual signature of /. B., or /. G.,Mantuanus, was not a mark of condition, but aLatinized form of his name. His best plates are A Sally of the Trojans
