Grecos arrival in Spain,or the reasons that brought him there, and when,in a judicial writ served upon him in 1579 inconnection with the Espolio painted for theCathedra), he was asked whether he had beenbrought to Toledo to paint the reredos of theChurch of Santo Domingo el Viejo, then finishedand erected in the said Church, he replied that hewas neither bound to say why he came to thatcity nor to answer the other questions put to him.This document and the signature and date (1577)on the Assumption, the centre painting of thereredos, now at Aranjuez, and replaced by a poorcopy, and the items of the accounts relating tothe work in the new church, according to which Dominico Theotocopuli painted the eight pictureson the High Altar and side altars, receiving forthe whole 1000 ducats, are the earliest and onlyclues to the date at which he took up his residenceand work in Spain. He may possibly have beenattracted by the prospect of participating in the DOMENICO THEOTOCOPULI CALLKD EL GRECO

Cervantes,Lope da Vega and Santa Teresa were amongst themany celebrities that lived at or passed throughToledo, and the cigarrales or orchards on theopposite bank of the Tagus formed the mostdelightful of meeting-places for those distinguishedmen. El Grecos first works in Toledo were thepaintings for the High Altar of Santo Domingo elA
