Description
English: Title: Discovery of the Sage of Chappaqua by H.M. Stanely

Abstract: A caricature of Horace Greeley, commenting upon (or perhaps anticipating) his disappearance from public life after his defeat in the November 5 presidential election. Journalist Henry Morton Stanley, famous for finding David Livingstone in East Africa in 1871, here discovers Horace Greeley in a jungle. Stanley holds a rifle and is accompanied by an African youth guiding a dog. Greeley is shown embracing a pig, with a copy of the New York "Tribune" at his side. In a tree behind him a monkey plays with Greeley's trademark white hat, while another reaches for a coconut. The U.S. Capitol shines brightly in the distance. Below the image are the wistful lines: "O! Had We Some Bright Little Isle Of Our Own / In Blue Summer Ocean Far Off And Alone." Shortly before he lost the presidential election Greeley's wife died, and shortly afterward he lost control of his newspaper and died insane. Physical description: 1 print on wove paper : lithograph ; image 41.4 x 57.4 cm.
