The essentialpathological lesion is probably a proliferation of the DISEASES OF BONES AND JOINTS 101 synovia with a resulting effusion in the joint cav-ity. The disease may easily be confused with syn-ovial tuberculosis. The results of treatment by mercury are usuallyprompt and satisfactory. A more severe and more frequent form of syph- syphiliticilis occurs as a proliferative inflammation of the Myelitismarrow and of the inner layer of the periosteumof the bone end, to which an inflammation of thesynovia may or may not be added.
