eruli are more numerous DEVELOPMENT OF THE PERMANENT KIDNEY. 97 and quite advanced in development before the posterior begin to form, andwhen the two arterial trees meet on the lateral border of the kidncn^ the anteriorsystem has traversed a longer distance inside the parenchyma than the posterior, upon whose territory it has begun to encroach (Fig, 70). The line of divisionbetween the two ar- terial trees is thenin the posterior halfof the kidney. This, however, isonly a part of theprocess producingthe remarkable re-lationship betweenthe two arterialtrees. The consid-erable preponder-ance of the anteriorsystem over the pos-terior has its maincause in the forma-tion of the longi-tudinal cortical col-umn, or wedge ofcortical substancewhich, similar tothe columns of Ber-tin, g r o w s fromthe surface downinto the sinus re-nalis. The situationof this long columnis an equal distanceaway from bothsides of the hilum, the anterior andposterior (see Fig.70, lower diagram), ^^ -~- Vert .col. i i

Because theposterior portion of the parenchyma is receding from the mesial line of the 98 EMBRYOLOGY OF THE UROGENITAL APPARATUS. body, the long columu (X) passes, not along the lateral border, but nearer theanterior surface of the kidney, and so comes to lie in the territory of the an-terior arterial tree, between whose branches it wedges its way down to the sinusrenalis. This being the natural, and therefore more frequent position of the ) k i d n e y at the time the bloodvessels develop,we find this typepresent in three-fourths of casesin the adult. Thereversed condi-tion is found incases where theanterior paren-chyma recedesfrom the middleline, while theposterior paren-chyma projectsnearer
