Oh, I have, I have, she cried, **rilget it, truly. Leaving Nancy seated on the grass,Dorothy quickly ran along the gravel 26 DOROTHY DAINTY walk, and mounting the steps, ran in atthe open door, and yet farther on to thecool, shady parlor. Snatching the mando-lin, she hastened out upon the terracejust as the maid passing through thehall espied her with the instrument inher hand. * I dont believe your mamma wouldlike to have you play with that, MissDorothy, she called, but Dorothy wasout of hearing by that time, around thecorner of the house. Of course the little girl could notproperly play the mandolin, but shemade a very sweet picture, which evenNancy could not but admire, as sheseated herself on the grass, and lookingup into the face of the Faun she sang,picking the strings for a funny littleaccompaniment.

Tes, doesnt it ? said Dorothy, pleasedthat her queer little friend should approveof her music. Meanwhile the maid had told Mrs.Dainty that Miss Dorothy had gone outto play with that guitar thing of herpapas, and Mrs. Dainty had sent Catherineout into the garden to call Dorothy in. Dorothys back was turned, but Nancysaw the maid approaching, and knowingthat she had ventured in uninvited, andseeing her escape by the gate cut off, shelooked about hastily, and then to avoidbeing put out, she climbed a slender treewhich grew close to the wall, crept outupon a branch like a cat, and droppingto the ground upon the other side, ran athigh speed toward home. Never once didshe turn, so sure was she that the gaunt- 28 DOROTHY DAINTY looking maid had climbed the tree as shehad and was pursuing her. Poor Nancy ! She knew she had doneno wrong, but she realized the diflfer
