Title
Dragonesque brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy dragonesque brooch from the Roman-British period. The brooch is incomplete, missing one head or terminal from the body and most of the pin; just the loop survives wrapped round the surviving neck. The break has also removed any sign of the catchplate or lug. The brooch is reverse S-shaped in plan, which is slightly unusual as a normal S shape is more common. The head has oval convex 'ears', and a trumpet shaped snout. There is an incised line forming a border all round the brooch. In the centre of the S the body swells and has been decorated with a raised design. In the centre there is a raised dot, with a sunken ring around it. Either side of this there is a pointed projection forming a boss and petal design as found on button and loop fasteners. The reverse is undecorated and has a hollow in the centre. Bayley and Butcher consider the dragonesque brooch to be a development in British made plate brooches (ibid. p 171). Bayley and Butcher also note that the distribution of dragonesque brooches is mainly in Britain, with a marked concentration in the North, where they were presumably made (p172). Based on a review of literature, Worrell (2007) dates Dragonesque brooches to AD 75-175. Similar brooches can be seen in Hattatt, p152-7. YORYM-7364A4 and SWYOR-94EA00 have similar decoration. The brooch is 27.5mm long, 20.45mm wide and 5.1mm thick. It weighs 5.25g.
