Title
Dragonesque brooch
Description
English:

Cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch dating from 75-175AD. The brooch is flat and in the form of a large 'S' with an expanded waist. Only one animal head remains, which is pointed oval in plan with an oval recess for an eye. The nose of the object has broken away. The back of the head extends up and is shaped representing ears which have been damaged. At the opposite end would have been another head which has broken away from the object. It would have been symmetrical when complete.

The central section has a central diagonal panel containing three pointed ovals infilled with blue enamel. On either side of this panel are two semi-circular cells infilled with yellow enamel. Two panels extend from the semi-circular cells and curve with the body. Within these panels the remains of blue enamel can be seen. Another small cell containing yellow enamel can be seen on the outer curve of the neck.

The reverse is flat and undecorated. The pin and catchplate are missing. The object has a mid green patina and is in good condition.
