Title
drawer pull
Description
English: Cast copper alloy drawer pull, with a rectangular suspension loop and a trefoil terminal, which would have suspended from a similarly florid escutcheon that was attached to a drawer in a chest or bureau. The pull or handle is decorated with moulded scrolls on the side knops and centrally with an anthropomorphic head, probably a cherub, on an extended neck connecting to a bulbous body at the base with wings either side. The head almost looks like a tulip rising from a bulb with leaves to the side, and is meant to emulate foliage. The pull is bent so that one side knop points inwards, and has corroded so that little of the original surface remains, with patches of bronze disease around the head and wings.

Read (1988) illustrates a similar cherub, stem and wings on a drawer handle on page 203, No.1423, which is dated from the 18th century.

Bailey (1993) illustrates drawer pulls with a similar suspension loops but simpler decoration on pages 16-17, Nos.1 & 18, which are dated from c.1690-1715
