||
Description |
A drinking song set to music with an illustration of a man on a donkey and three drinkers toasting Bacchus. Engraving and etching, mid 18th century, after Corelli. Detail: Three fashionable drinkers toast a statue of Bacchus while a stubborn donkey eats the holy grape vine. Lettering: In praise of Bacchus. for two voices and other instruments. the musick by Corelli. 1st flute 2nd flute ... Lettering continues with three verses of song: "Bacchus, assist us to sing thy great glory; chief of the Gods, we exult in thy story. Bacchus, assist us to sing thy great glory; chief of the Gods, we exult in the story. Wine's first projector, mankind's protector, patron to topers, how we do adore thee! Wine's first projector, mankind's protector, patron to topers, how we do adore thee! Friend to the muses, a whetstone to Venus; herald to pleasures, when wine wou'd convene us, sorrow's physician, when our condition, in wordly cares wants a cordial to skreen us. Nature she smil'd when thy birth it was blazed; mankind rejoyc'd when thy altars were raised; mirth will be flowing, whilst the vine's growing, and sober souls at our joys be amazed." Music is written for both two voices and two flutes. Iconographic Collections |
