Summary edit

Description
English: Four female volunteers are shown sleeping outdoors, their British army helmets close to hand. The woodland cover and the tin helmets would help to protect the women against aerial attack, but they were never entirely safe: at Etaples Army Camp in April 1918 nine female volunteers were killed by German bombers.

The shape of the helmets worn by these members of the Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps identifies them as British: the distinctive 'bowler' style is based on an English national design dating back to the middle ages. French and German helmets were also based on long-established national designs.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. A detachment of the Q.M.A.A.C. encamped in a big forest in France. During the hot nights they sleep out in the open. Here are some, they are supplied with tin hats also in the case of air raids.']
