itions pre-vailed underground. The physi-cal character of the ore was such thatshrinkage stopes were hardly ever nec-essary, the method actually employedinvolving large open stopes with theroof supported by pillars. The backsof these stopes had to be examined asthe work progressed, and the lot ofthe barman who attended to this mat-ter would not seem to be a happy one. There was, ho\vever, no lack of appli-cations for these positions, and it isworthy of record that, during thetwenty years the mines were operated, neither a fatality nor even a seriousaccident occurred among the barmen. 4S MAY be seen, each of the men/x makes use of a rope, one end ofwhich is firmly fastened to a pointabove the work, the other being placedabout the waist of the barman. Shouldhe lose his footing he may be, for themoment, inconvenienced, but the ropeis always the means of preventing anasty fall and olfers a safe method ofcarrying on the work of barring down. He found the su-perintendent pessimistic, and decided to have themine examined. Hechose for this work adistinguished engineer, whose report provednone too glowing. Therewas some copper, itstated, which perhaps itwould pay to take out be-fore shutting down. Butoperation was continuedin the belief that theproperty had merit, which proved to be thefact, and eventually theLewisohns organized theBoston & Montana Con-solidated Copper Co,Later, when this com-pany was taken over b,\B
