Title
ESS-72C184 Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: Roman (100-250AD) cast copper alloy zoomorphic brooch. The brooch in the form of a duck, similar to Hattatt page 237 no 1170. The body is almost flat, divided into four cells which were filled with enamel - only a trace of blue enamel survives in the outer two cells. The outer cells are triangular, and the inner cells are elongated 'tear-drop' shapes. The neck is raised at a right angle to the body, and there is a worn break where the head would have been located. The tail turns slightly upwards and there is a worn break - there would probably have been a chain loop located in the end of the tail. The reverse of the brooch has a catchplate located below the neck, and the hinge lug below the tail. The pin is missing. The brooch has a dark green patina, however most of the original surface has been lost and it is very pitted. The brooch is 22mm long.
